Up until now this has been a price, rather than a supply crisis – caused by the huge leap in the wholesale price of gas, which in turn has led to the collapse of nine domestic suppliers. On Thursday, the energy and business secretary, Kwasi Kwarteng, told the Energy UK conference that the government was “confident” that the UK has enough supplies to meet demand this winter.
